Daily Dose of the Dub: Wedman returns to Seattle, Hitmen get Kastelic back from Senators and more

Kastelic returned to Calgary 

Mark Kastelic has been returned to the Calgary Hitmen after attending Ottawa Senators (NHL) and Belleville Senators (AHL) training camps as an unsigned draft pick. The Hitmen were only carrying James Malm and Dakota Krebs as overage players so they’ll be able to welcome Kastelic back into the lineup without saying goodbye to anyone.

Wedman sent back to Seattle 

A U.S. division once-thought to be one of the weaker divisions in the WHL this year may now be with the strongest as Seattle Thunderbirds forward Matthew Wedman has become the latest player to make a surprising return to the WHL. The 1999-born forward attended training camp with the NHL’s Florida Panthers and their AHL affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds, after being selected by the Panthers in the seventh round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. He has not yet inked a contract with the Panthers organization.

With Wedman back with the team, Seattle will now have to move out one of Wedman, Jaxan KaluskiAndrej Kukuca or Conner Bruggen-Cate prior to October 10th to comply with CHL regulations with overage players. Kaluski is currently listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury which could extend the deadline for the T-Birds if he hasn’t returned by October 10th.

Cozens named WHL Player of the Week

Dylan Cozens has come back from Buffalo Sabres training camp and is already making an impact with the Lethbridge Hurricanes. In just two games of action, he’s tallied three goals and three assists and earned WHL Player of the Week honours.

Warm takes home WHL Goalie of the Week Honours 

Also returning from an NHL Training Camp with the Washington Capitals, Tri-City Americans goaltender Beck Warm has made an immediate impact in his return to the WHL. In two games over the weekend he posted a 2-0 record with 0.500 GAA and a .986 save percentage with one shutout to earn WHL Goalie of the Week honours.

Silvertips unveil Pink the Rink Jerseys 

In the above video, the Everett Silvertips have unveiled their jerseys for their annual “Pink the Rink” game.

Silvertips injury updates 

As reported by Josh Horton of The Herald, Everett Silvertips forward Martin Fasko-Rudas has returned to the ice with the Silvertips in a non-contact jersey at practice after offseason surgery. Forward Michal Gut is also skating in a non-contact uniform while Gianni Fairbrother appears to be at full health after suffering an upper-body injury at Montreal Canadiens Training Camp.

Klassen, Giannuzzi released from Winterhawks active roster 

In under the radar moves, the Portland Winterhawks have returned Gabe Klassen to the SMHL’s Prince Albert Mintos and released Dante Giannuzzi from the active roster which has allowed him to report to the MJHL’s Winnipeg Blues. Neither player has played in a regular-season game with the Winterhawks this season.

ICE release Patrick from the active roster 

The Winnipeg ICE have released 2001-born defenseman Zac Patrick from the active roster. He suited up for one game with the ICE and recorded three shots on goal. He’s expected to report to the Portage Terriers of the MJHL.

Kieper sent back to Midget

With Max Paddock returning to full health, the Regina Pats have sent Matthew Kieper back to his MMHL club, the Winnipeg Bruins. Kieper did not play in any regular-season games with the Pats.

Ormsby joins BCHL’s Wild 

After being released by the Moose Jaw Warriors, Luke Ormsby has elected to join the BCHL’s Wenatchee Wild. The Monroe, Washington native is a veteran of 190 WHL games with the Seattle Thunderbirds, Everett Silvertips and aforementioned Warriors notching 16 goals and 22 assists.

Oil Barons acquire Pow from Powell River

The Fort McMurray Oil Barons of the AJHL have acquired 2000-born forward Kyle Pow (38 GP, 0 G, 3 A with the Kelowna Rockets) from the BCHL’s Powell River Kings. Pow had yet to play for Powell River but did play 17 games for the Kings last season recording one assist.
