Today a prestigious duel against Germany awaits: “We want to be ready from the start!”

“We want to be ready right from the start. We talked about that again during today’s training. We want to perform well against Germany from the start, play international, structured ice hockey, play with the puck with that straightforward touch that is necessary at this level and act with vehement but sensible physical use. If we do that, then we will be an unpleasant opponent for Germany and also have a chance of winning the game,” says Head coach Roger Bader a tactical insight.

Slovakia had to admit defeat 2:6 at the start of the 2025 Germany Cup on Thursday afternoon. Our neighbors laid the foundation for success in the first third, after which Austria was already 0:5 behind. “We weren’t present in the first third, the way you have to be present in international ice hockey,” he says Roger Bader openly share the lessons from these 20 minutes. With 10:4 shots on goal in the second and 15:3 in the third period, the remaining 40 minutes were determined.

That’s exactly what we want to show again on Saturday against favorite opponents Germany, Bernd Wolf: “The hall will be full. I expect a cool atmosphere, everyone will be against us. What could be better. We have to play the second and third third like yesterday, stick with it, act as a team. The Germans certainly won’t make it easy for us, but if we set our sights on a lot, we can achieve a lot.”

At the Germany Cup a year ago, as well as in preparation for the 2025 World Cup, our neighbors came off the ice as winners. The last victory over Germany was celebrated in Zell am See at the end of April 2024.

Anniversary for Dominic Zwerger

The game will be a special evening for Dominic Zwerger. With the duel against Germany, the Swiss legionnaire enters the 100 club. With yesterday’s assist to make it 1:5 by Peter Schneider, Zwerger has 25 goals and 36 assists in 99 games. Against Germany, one or two points and a win can be added to the anniversary.

Memories of the 2025 World Cup

After nine defeats in a row, Austria broke the spell at the 2025 World Cup in the final group game against Latvia. With an incredible performance, they defeated the 2023 bronze medalist in Stockholm (SWE) 6-1, also thanks to a brace from Dominic Zwerger, and moved into the quarter-finals. Latvia lost its opening game against Germany 1:4 on Thursday. ORF SPORT + will broadcast live on Sunday from 11:00 a.m.
