Both Austrian NHL legionnaires won their games in the North American ice hockey league on Monday. Carinthian Marco Kasper and his Detroit Red Wings won the duel with the Maple Leafs in Toronto 3-2 thanks to a last-minute goal. Vorarlberg’s Marco Rossi scored the gold goal in the shootout to make it 4-3 in the home game of his Minnesota Wild against the Los Angeles Kings.
Marco Kasper’s team only narrowly had the upper hand away from home: Mason Appleton scored the winning goal 45 seconds before the final siren. The Maple Leafs were beaten again by Detroit just two days after their 6-3 home win. Detroit took a 2-0 lead through captain Dylan Larkin in the power play (19th) and James van Riemsdyk (45th), Matthew Knies (48th) and Calle Jarnkrok (54th) tied the score for the Maple Leafs. Despite 40:15 shots on goal, Toronto once again left the ice as a loser because Appleton, who was hired in the summer, scored for Detroit for the first time.
The Wild almost gave the game away after taking a 3-0 lead
Marco Rossi’s Minnesota Wild game was unusual. In the first period, the home team pulled ahead with three power play goals within 90 seconds, with Rossi providing the assist on the first. The scorers were Jared Spurgeon (15th), Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy (17th each). A goalless second third was followed by a counterattack from the guests in the final third, who reduced the score to 2:3 through Kevin Fiala (44′) and Quinton Byfield (47′) and equalized just 46 seconds before the end of the game through Adrian Kempe.
A goalless extra time followed, and the first three shooters from both teams also missed in the penalty shootout. Marco Rossi was the last shooter on his team and scored one goal. The Kings couldn’t do anything to counter this: Andrei Kuzmenko was the last shooter to fail because of Wild goalie Jesper Wallstedt.
