The Court of Auditors of the Italian region of Lombardy has initiated investigations into possible financial damage in connection with the Santa Giulia ice hockey hall in Milan – this is reported by “Sportnews”. The arena was the venue for ice hockey competitions during the 2026 Winter Olympics and is now the focus of investigations due to sharply increased construction costs.
Planned private financing failed
The hall was originally supposed to be built without public money. The Eventim subsidiary Evd Milan Srl was responsible for this. Due to significantly higher construction costs, the company applied for additional public funding totaling 134 million euros, according to Italian media.
However, a technical audit by the Milan city administration came to a different conclusion. Accordingly, only a little more than 50 million euros in additional funds would have been justified.
Police seize documents
Documents have already been seized by the police as part of the investigation. Above all, the so-called “extra costs” that were incurred during the construction of the hall are examined.
The authorities want to find out whether public funds have been overburdened and whether this has caused financial damage to the Italian treasury.
The investigations could now raise new questions about the financing of major public projects and the use of taxpayer money.
