Big names, strong resumes and high expectations: The ICE Hockey League once again experienced numerous prominent newcomers ahead of the 2025/26 season. But not every transfer developed as hoped. While some legionnaires hit the ground running, others have so far fallen well short of expectations despite their impressive CVs. A look at those new additions from external leagues that are considered the biggest flops of the current season so far. Yesterday we focused on the top transfers in the league – Part 1, Part 2
Brett Ritchie (EC VSV)
Brett Ritchie is one of the biggest disappointments of the current season. The long-time NHL player was brought in to Villach as a replacement for the injured captain Alex Rauchwald, but made a slow impression from the start. After just eight games and three points, the misunderstanding was already over. Ritchie moved to the EIHL in Sheffield, while VSV signed a new replacement in Brett Budgell.
Darren Archibald (Hydro Fehervar AV19)
Darren Archibald returned to the ICEHL with great expectations after playing for the Vienna Capitals in the 2020/21 season. The former NHL striker was supposed to bring additional quality to Fehérvár, but fell well short of expectations. With just 15 points in 42 games, the 35-year-old clearly doesn’t deliver enough output. The results are sobering, especially in comparison to his strong years in the DEL with the Grizzlys Wolfsburg.
Emmett Sproule (HC Innsbruck)
Emmett Sproule has also fallen short of expectations so far, although his situation needs to be viewed differently. The 24-year-old Canadian is playing his first professional season, but three goals in 28 games is manageable for an import player. His offensive output has been low so far, even if he is not one of the most expensive players. It is also noticeable that teammate Benjamin Corbeil mastered the transition from college ice hockey to professional sport much better.
Justin Richards (Hydro Fehervar AV19)
Justin Richards came to Fehérvár with a lot of experience from the AHL as well as a DEL season with Düsseldorf. The 27-year-old American was supposed to set an offensive tone, but never really found his game. Four goals and eight assists in 39 games are clearly not enough for a player of his CV. The minus value of -12 also reflects a disappointing season.
