U18 World Cup: Austria gives away an important point against South Korea!

Austria led 3-1 until 91 seconds before the end of the game. South Korea already pulled its goalkeeper for a sixth outfield player who initially scored the goal 2-3 and equalized one second before the final siren. In overtime, Johannes Dobrovolny redeemed his team with the game-winning goal. Despite the victory, the red-white-red camp is not entirely happy, as in the end they left behind a point that could still be decisive in the fight for promotion. On Friday, 11:30 a.m. live in the Krone live stream, they will face Lithuania at the end.

In the fight for first place, things can get really exciting again on the last match day. The starting position: Austria will be promoted to Division IA if they beat Lithuania in regular time and France loses to Estonia or South Korea. Lithuania will win gold if they beat Austria, whether in regular time, in overtime or after a penalty shootout. And France also still has a chance of reaching first place, but in any case has to beat Estonia and South Korea to do so.

For the ÖEHV selection, the game against South Korea initially started according to plan. Dominik Ferner gave his team the lead in the second minute. They dominated the game, but failed again and again due to the South Korean goalkeeper Donggeun Lee. Conversely, the Asians only allowed two shots on goal. Little changed in the second third. Austria dominated, South Korea defended well and repeatedly got out of their own zone with breaks. And one of these liberating blows led to the 1-1 equalizer in the 31st minute.

Austria came back onto the field focused from the second break and took a deserved 3-1 lead thanks to goals from Nico Koschek (46th) and Johannes Dobrovolny (54th/PP). Everything looked like a victory for Rotweißrot, but South Korea presented itself as spoilsport from the ÖEHV’s point of view. In the 59th minute the goalkeeper was taken off the ice and promptly scored the goal. With one more field player on the ice, we even managed to equalize exactly one second before the end of the game.

In overtime, Johannes Dobrovolny was there again to give Austria victory and preserve their chance of promotion.

Head Coach Peter Schweda: “It feels like a defeat. We weren’t ready to win in regular time, but we’re happy that we left the ice as winners in the end.”
