Dominic Zwerger after 100 international matches milestone: “Alpen-Gretzky is a great honor”

Dominic Zwerger reached a special milestone in the 3-2 friendly win against Italy in Feldkirch: The 29-year-old striker was honored for his 100th international match with the national team.

Emotional moments and great memories

The honor had a particularly personal meaning for Zwerger, as it took place not far from his home – in the presence of his family. In terms of sport, the attacker looks back on some formative moments: The biggest highlight he cites was the 6-1 win at the 2025 World Cup against Latvia, which brought Austria into the quarter-finals for the first time in years. However, the defeat at the 2024 World Cup against Great Britain, which meant they missed out on promotion to the knockout phase, remains much more painful.

“Alpen-Gretzky” and next destinations

His nickname also continues to make Zwerger smile, as he reveals to the “Kronen Zeitung”: He sees the name “Alpen-Gretzky” as a great honor that fans gave him during his time at HC Ambrì-Piotta.

With a view to the upcoming World Cup in Zurich, the national player formulates clear goals: First of all, they want to ensure that they stay in the league, and then they want to win at least three games. But one thing is also clear to Zwerger: Austria is now taken seriously by all opponents.

Zurich stage awaits

The World Cup will be held in the modern Swiss Life Arena – a special venue for Zwerger, where he has already been successful with Ambrì-Piotta. Now he wants to ensure further moments of success there with Austria.
