The Steinbach Black Wings Linz celebrated a must-win against last-placed HC TIWAG Innsbruck in the fight for the top 10, although it was hard-fought. Despite clear playful advantages, the guests had to fear for success until the final phase. After a balanced initial phase, Linz increasingly took control and rewarded themselves with two goals in the first third. Shawn St-Amant opened the scoring after 15 minutes with a rebound, and just two minutes later Brian Lebler made it 2-0. Innsbruck rarely threatened Rasmus Tirronen’s goal in the first half. The Black Wings remained dominant in the middle period, but missed several good opportunities. This took revenge in the 28th minute when Stefan Klassek used a Tyrolean counterattack to make it 1-2. Linz then pushed for the third goal, but hit the woodwork several times or was denied by goalie Matthew Vernon. In the final third, Ken Ograjensek made it 3-1 with a well-placed shot in the 52nd minute. However, Innsbruck immediately came close again in the power play through Matthew Wilkins and put the guests under a lot of pressure in the last few minutes.
