ÖEL: Hohenems wins West-Schlager / WEV defeats Marburg

In the West Division of the Austrian Ice Hockey League, league leaders EHC Lustenau celebrated a clear 5-1 win away at EHC Kundl. SC Hohenems narrowly won at home against HC Kufstein 4-2. The Wattens Penguins won their home opener against the Dornbirn Bulldogs 6:3 for the first time this season. In the East Division, the Vienna Ice Skating Club defeated HDK Maribor 2-1 at the open-air opener at Heumarkt. The big hit between the KSV Kangaroos and champions Sharks Gmunden had to be canceled due to a defect in the cooling system.

EHC Kundl awaited league leaders EHC Lustenau in the West Division on Saturday in the Eisarena Kundl. It was the second meeting between the two teams; Vorarlberg celebrated a 3-1 home win at the beginning of October. In the first section, the Lions showed why they had come to the Lower Inn Valley as leaders. Timo Demuth in the majority after just under two minutes (2nd) and Jonas Kutzer (12th) ensured a 2-0 lead. But the home team showed their strength at home, held on to their guns and scored 1-2 through Maximilian Mackner 18 seconds before the end of the first period (20th).

In the second period, Lustenau once again took advantage of a superiority through Jonas Kutzer to restore their two-goal lead (33′) and even pulled ahead to 4-1 38 seconds before the second half-time siren. Felix Zipperle scored Lustenau’s fourth goal (40′). In the final third the guests didn’t let anything go wrong, on the contrary: Mattias Adam increased the score to 5:1 (52nd), which was also the final score.

SC Hohenems also defeated HC Kufstein in the second duel of the season

SC Samina Hohenems met HC Kufstein in the West Division in the Herrenried Stadium on Saturday. At the beginning of October, the Vorarlbergers laid the foundation for a strong season against the Dragons with a narrow 3-2 away win. In the first third, the trend from the exciting first leg was confirmed: After Kufstein’s early lead through Valentin Hammerle, who scored 1-0 in the majority (5th), the Steinbocks were soon able to equalize to 1-1 through Kai Fässler (10th).

After a goalless middle period, the two teams turned on the momentum again in the final third. Julian Payr brought Hohenems forward for the first time (45th). A few moments later, Markus Prock made it 2-2 for the Dragons (46th). This time the Ems team had a quick answer: Patrick Spannring made it 3-2 for the hosts (48th). Afterwards, the two opponents exchanged a few pleasantries, and in the end the Kufstein goalie Thomas Pfarrmaier drew. Hohenems said thank you and made it 4-2 with Leon Schmeiser’s Emptynet goal 35 seconds before the end (60′).

First win for Wattens Penguins against Dornbirner EC Bulldogs

The WSG Swarovski Wattens Penguins were looking forward to their home opener in the West Division against the Dornbirn EC Bulldogs on Saturday. In their only meeting so far, the Tyroleans suffered a narrow 3-4 defeat against Vorarlberg on the first matchday at the beginning of October. The Tyroleans, strong at home, completed the good start on their own ice with a double strike: Daniel Frischmann scored the 1-0 for the Penguins in the second power play (10th). Just under a minute and a half later, Nico Burkhart made it 2-0 (11th). Almost four minutes before the end of the third, the Tyroleans took advantage of the next power play through Fabian Nußbaumer to make it 3-0 (16th). Wattens followed up and made it 4-0 in the first third (18th) through Daniel Frischmann, who scored his second goal.

In the second section, the Bulldogs fought their way back into the match: Manuel Merk reduced the score to 1:4 (25th). A minute and a half later, Lustenau loanee Maid Meduseljac made it 2-4 (26th). After Vorarlberg’s double strike, there was no goal for a long time, Patrick Huber scored the 5-2 for Wattens shortly before the end of the period (39th). Dornbirn didn’t give up and came up 3-5 in the final third thanks to Sebastian Koberger’s advantage (48′). New signing Mikus Mintautiskis redeemed the Wattens fans with the late 6:3 (59th minute), the Penguins had the first three points.

East Division:

Vienna ice skating club defeats Maribor at Heumarkt

After two indoor games in the Steffl Arena 3, the Vienna Ice Skating Club met the HDK Maribor for the first time in the East Division on Saturday in the atmospheric open-air arena on Heumarkt in front of the Vienna Concert Hall. After a goalless first period, in which emotions only flared up at the end, the match remained a highly exciting affair in the second third. Both teams missed one power play opportunity. 30 seconds before the second siren, Daniel Aschauer redeemed the WEV fans and scored the late 1-0 (40th).

In the final section, the Slovenians struck back early: Nejc Bizjak equalized to make it 1-1 (45th). Crunch time was announced in front of the concert hall: The Viennese forced the lead, Theodor Fichtinger scored the 2-1 (56th). In the end, the Füchse pulled their keeper Jaka Gajšek while outnumbered, WEV saved the narrow victory over time and celebrated an important three-pointer in the first outdoor game of the new season.

KSV Kangaroos vs. UEHV CAM4DENT Sharks Gmunden canceled

The big hit between the KSV Kangaroos and champions Sharks Gmunden, as well as the WEV, had to be canceled at short notice due to a defect in the cooling system. New dates will follow.
