Former national team player and current TV expert Gregor Baumgartner sharply criticizes the Austrian Ice Hockey Association (ÖEHV). The reason is a recent statement by the association on ice rink closures and the appeal to politicians.
Baumgartner does not deny the infrastructural problems, but sees the causes as homemade. “There are already too few halls, and at the same time budgets are being burned for short-term success,” the 46-year-old told the “Kronen Zeitung”. From his point of view, there is a lack of patience and long-term concepts in Austrian ice hockey – not even the association has a sustainable strategy.
Baumgartner is particularly critical of the distribution of funds. In order to ensure success for the senior national team, budgets in the youth and women’s areas would be cut. “What’s the point? Then there are around 25 good players who cost the clubs a lot of money,” said the former ÖEHV development manager.
The association sees the situation differently and refers to existing concepts and achievements in its statement. However, responsibility for the current development does not only lie with the association, but also with the political framework.
