In the first of two tests, the Austrian national ice hockey team was clearly defeated by the Czech Republic 1:5. Positive: 18-year-old Leon Kolarik scored Austria’s goal in front of their home crowd. The second meeting between the two nations awaits tomorrow in Jihlava.
Austria struggled in the first 20 minutes. As expected, our neighbors came with a lot of speed, let the disc run well and caused disruption early in the attacking third. In the 5th minute, Atte Tolvanen was finally beaten for the first time after Michael Spacek deflected a shot from Filip Pyrochta into an unstoppable position. Less than three minutes later, Dominik Kubalik made it 2-0 for the guests with a powerful shot.
Austria became really dangerous for the first time towards the end of the third when they created some good chances when they had the majority. In the second third they were able to keep up with the Czechs’ pace much better, played more directly and repeatedly brought the disc into the attacking zone. But first the Czech Republic should write again. A penalty against Lucas Thaler was used to make it 3-0.
Shortly afterwards, Leon Kolarik, who played his first senior international match, flashed his talent and, after work by Ian Scherzer, put his team on the scoreboard. Now they were finally in the game, but narrowly failed to score again.
The momentum also remained on the side of the 2024 world champion. In the 43rd minute, Thomas Klassek unfortunately deflected Filip Kral’s shot, which jumped over Tolvanen into the goal. Austria’s goalkeeper performed well throughout the entire 60 minutes and recorded a big save shortly before the end of the game against Daniel Vozelinek, who was charging alone, but he hit the target again and made the final score 1:5.
The return game in Jihlava follows on Friday at 5:00 p.m. Next week they will host Germany in Zell am See on April 30th, play the return game in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on May 2nd and finish the preparation on May 9th in Klagenfurt against Slovenia.
