Canada started the Olympic ice hockey tournament with a confident victory. The star ensemble clearly won 5-0 against the Czech Republic on Thursday, underlining their role as favorites. Macklin Celebrini, the youngest player in the team, scored the opening goal shortly before the first break. The North Americans continued to expand their lead, while NHL superstar Connor McDavid shone with three assists. Goalie Jordan Binnington kept a clean sheet thanks to 26 saves and celebrated a much-noticed shutout.
USA live up to their role as favorites
The USA also lived up to its role as favorite. After a balanced first third, the team ultimately prevailed 5-1 against Latvia. Brock Nelson stood out with two goals and played a key role in the clear success.
Germany successful thanks to NHL stars
Germany also celebrated a successful start. The selection beat Denmark 3-1, with NHL star Leon Draisaitl scoring after just 23 seconds. Tim Stützle made the preliminary decision with a brace in the second third and secured an important opening victory for the Germans.
Switzerland sovereign
Switzerland started the tournament just as successfully. The Swiss celebrated a confident 4-0 victory over France and set the Wichens for victory early on. Damien Riat put the Swiss in front, Janis Moser increased the lead to 2-0 in the first period. In the final period, Timo Meier secured the 4-0 victory with a brace.
