The traditional Spengler Cup starts today in Davos. This invitational tournament is being held for the 97th time, and this year there is also a crack that showed up in the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League many years ago.
Three teams will duel in two groups until Sunday, with the winner being chosen on December 31st. This year, in addition to hosts HC Davos and Team Canada, the Finnish representatives HIFK, Sparta Prague, Fribourg-Gotteron, as well as a US college selection are taking part.
A certain Tyler Morley will play for Canada, 16-time Spengler Cup winners. Years ago he stormed into the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga (EBEL) and showed his offensive qualities there. In 2017/18 he laced up his skates for Medvescak Zagreb and was able to score a strong 25 goals and 63 points in 54 games this season. With this result, the now 34-year-old landed in fourth place in the league-wide scoring rankings, behind Rafael Rotter (71), Corey Locke (70) and Brian Lebler (75). Morley has been storming for EHC Kloten in the top Swiss league since 2023. This is Morley’s second participation in the “Spengler”; he already took part in the tournament with Kloten in 2023/24.
For Canada, the Spengler Cup starts today with a duel against the US college team. Remarkable: Jason Akeson, another crack with an ICEHL past, will appear in the prestigious duel. It was recently awarded from Geneva to Helsinki.
