The “Best-of-7” final series in the win2day ICE Hockey League starts on Wednesday. The Moser Medical Graz99ers, who are still unbeaten in the current playoffs, enjoy home advantage in the first game against HC Falkensteiner Pustertal. After 52 regular season games, the Moser Medical Graz99ers finished the regular season in first place. In the playoffs they celebrated a “sweep” in both the quarter-finals against Villach and the semi-finals against Fehérvár. Now the Styrians start the final series against HC Falkensteiner Pustertal with home advantage. The South Tyroleans finished fifth after the regular round, dethroned Salzburg with a “sweep” in the first playoff round and won 4-1 against Ljubljana in the semi-finals. Both Graz and Pustertal are in the final for the first time. There have been clear results in each of the four duels of the season so far – the 99ers left the ice as winners three times.
In 16 out of 24 cases in league history, the club that won Game 1 of the final series became champions. It is only the third final since the league was founded that will take place without Klagenfurt or Salzburg taking part (previously in 2002 and 2003: Villach vs. Linz). With a final win, the wolves from Bruneck would qualify for the Champions Hockey League for the first time. If, on the other hand, Graz wins the title, the third starting place – alongside the already qualified 99ers and the KAC – would go to Salzburg.
