Michael Grabner has long since ended his active career – but there is no question of an ice hockey pension for the ex-NHL striker. Instead of the golf course, the ice is still the focus for the 38-year-old: In the USA, he is currently coaching young players with the Junior Coyotes in Phoenix.
Coach instead of retirement
Grabner has been working with U14 talents for three years and is surprised by his new role: Getting into the coaching business was unplanned, but has now become a real passion. He particularly focuses on the development of young players – including Austrian talents and his own son Aidan, who is facing a possible draft in the Western Hockey League. Aidan is the eldest offspring. In addition to him, Olivia and Benjamin, the fourth child is currently on the way.
Expensive system in North America
Grabner also gives the “Kronen Zeitung” insights into the US youth system, which differs significantly from Europe. Training is expensive: $8,000 per season is the norm, and top programs cost several times that amount. This means an enormous financial burden for many families, and some take out loans.
Criticism of the Austrian system
In the long term, Grabner would also like to take the next step in his career as a coach – ideally as head coach. He does not rule out a return to Austria. At the same time, he criticizes the development in domestic ice hockey: too many imported players would limit the opportunities for young Austrians. His appeal: More focus on training and clear roles for young players – based on the North American model.
