Official: Austria is going to the World Cup with this squad!

It was one of the central and difficult decisions: do you go into the World Cup with eight defenders and 14 strikers, or with nine defenders and 13 strikers? And of course, who are the 22 players making the trip to Zurich on Wednesday? After internal discussions within the coaching staff, a decision was made after the 4-1 win over Slovenia on Saturday evening.

In short: Head Coach Roger Bader will approach the World Cup with nine defenders and 13 strikers. The goalkeeper trio with David Kickert, Atte Tolvanen and Florian Vorauer was decided early on. The nine defenders are: Gregor Biber, Dominic Hackl, David Maier, Thimo Nickl, Ramon Schnetzer, Paul Stapelfeldt, Clemens Unterweger, Philipp Wimmer and Bernd Wolf.

The 13 strikers are: Tim Harnisch, Mario Huber, Paul Huber, Leon Kolarik, Henrik Neubauer, Benjamin Nissner, Maximilian Rebernig, Ian Scherzer, Peter Schneider, Simeon Schwinger, Lucas Thaler, Leon Wallner and Dominic Zwerger.

Peter Schneider acts as captain

Peter Schneider will lead the national team as captain for the first time at a World Cup. In total, the 25-man squad brings 1,414 international games of experience to the ice. The goalkeepers as well as the defenders all already know the World Cup procedures and have taken part in one or more World Cups.

Among the strikers there are five debutants: Tim Harnisch, Leon Kolarik, Maximilian Rebernig, Ian Scherzer and Leon Wallner.

On the night from Saturday to Sunday, Laval Rocket, the Montreal Canadiens farm team where Vinzenz Rohrer and David Reinbacher are employed, was eliminated from the AHL playoffs by the Toronto Marlies. It remains to be seen whether the two, or at least one of the two, will join the national team in the coming days. Discussions about this will begin immediately with the players and the club.

Head coach Roger Bader:

“Like every year, nominating the World Cup squad is a difficult decision. And I’m happy about that, because all the players made it difficult for me and gave their calling cards during the World Cup preparations. We are convinced that we will achieve our World Cup goals with this team. The top priority is still staying in the league and that requires two wins. After the Laval Rocket’s elimination in the AHL playoffs, we will immediately be with Vinzenz Rohrer and David Reinbacher get in touch and see what happens.”
