Game 7 of the quarterfinal series was actually supposed to take place in the
National League
between
HC Servette-Geneva and
HC Lausanne would be a sporting highlight – but after the final whistle there were massive riots in the stands.
Lausanne fans storm the home sector
Shortly after the end of the game, the situation in the stadium escalated: a group of masked away fans from Lausanne left their block and stormed into the Geneva supporters’ home area. Violent clashes immediately broke out there.
Eyewitness reports and videos show how fans from both camps attacked each other. There were fist fights and wild brawls in which the situation at times got completely out of control.
Brutal scenes in the stands
What was particularly frightening was that some of those involved acted with considerable aggression. In one case, a Lausanne supporter is said to have even used a belt as a striking weapon.
Meanwhile, many of the remaining spectators reacted to the scenes with whistles and boos. Occasional cups also flew from the stands towards the attacking fans.
Police intervene – situation calms down
Only when the police entered the interior of the stadium did the situation slowly ease. The attacking Lausanne fans then retreated back into their own sector, whereupon the situation gradually calmed down.
A larger police operation was necessary to prevent further escalations.
Derby with history
The riots don’t come out of nowhere: the Léman derby between Lausanne and Geneva has been considered one of the most heated duels in Swiss ice hockey for years.
There had already been incidents during the course of the series. After Game 4 in Lausanne, fans of both teams also fought, which could only be stopped with the use of pepper spray.
From a sporting point of view, it’s a clear matter
Sporty sat down
HC Servette-Geneva In game 7 they won 5-1 and won the series. For
HC Lausanne This ends an intense quarter-final series – which, however, is overshadowed by the unpleasant scenes.
