First duel between Salzburg & Graz: will the champions get back on track?

After yesterday’s CHL round of 16 game in Ingolstadt, EC Red Bull Salzburg continues on Friday with the win2day ICE Hockey League away game against the Moser Medical Graz99ers (6:30 p.m., Sporteurope.tv).

It is the first meeting of the current season with the Styrians, who have a new head coach as of today. The Red Bulls want to rehabilitate themselves after yesterday’s 2:6 defeat against ERC Ingolstadt and find their way back to a successful performance.

Initial situation

For the first time this season, the Red Bulls will face the Graz99ers, who after 16 rounds are in fifth place in the table with 29 points, ahead of the sixth-placed Red Bulls with 25 points. The Red Bulls definitely want to score points again in order to reduce the gap to the top places in the table and stay in the race for a direct playoff place. It is at least as important to quickly consolidate again after the last four defeats in the CHL (yesterday in Ingolstadt 2:6) and ICE Hockey League and to utilize the full performance potential as a team.

The Graz99ers are also running behind their demands at the moment, which recently led to a change of coach. In the last two games before the international break – in the meantime with sports director Philipp Pinter as interim coach – the Styrians scored again, namely in Budapest with 4:3 after overtime and in Bolzano with 4:3 after a penalty shootout. The duel between the table neighbors is eagerly awaited, although the “bunker” in Graz has proven to be a good place for the Red Bulls in the last two seasons. All four games ended with a Salzburg victory.

New trainer in Graz

Just today, the Graz99ers introduced their new coach, Dan Lacroix, who takes the place of his predecessor Harry Lange. The 56-year-old Canadian and former NHL striker has been in the coaching business since 2003 and, after many years as an assistant coach in the NHL with the Kölner Haien (2018/19), also gained experience in the DEL. After several years as a coach in the QMJHL and most recently in the Lithuanian U18 national team, Lacroix is now making his debut as head coach in the ICE Hockey League.

Statement Mario Huber

“We will draw the right conclusions from yesterday’s defeat. Graz is a top club and will demand everything from us. We simply have to skate more and keep our sticks on the ice to avoid penalties. It’s a good moment to show who we really are and see that we can get out of this little situation together.”
