Third-placed Adler Stadtwerke Kitzbühel narrowly retained the upper hand in the Alps Hockey League with a 3-2 win against HC Gherdeina valgardena.it on Saturday evening. The home team from South Tyrol were still in the lead until six minutes before the end of the game. In the second game of the day, SG Cortina Hafro beat KHL Sisak 3-2 after a shootout, meaning the Croatians missed out on the top spot. The AHL week will conclude with two more matches on Sunday.
Until six minutes before the end everything pointed to a home win for HC Gherdeina valgardena.it, but then Adler Stadtwerke Kitzbühel turned the game in their favor. First, Niklas Wetzl equalized, and just two minutes before the end, Yoan Loshnig – who had already scored the goal to make it 1-2 from Kitzbühel’s point of view – scored the game-winner for the third-place team, who celebrated their third win in a row. For Ninth Val Gardena, however, it was one of five defeats from the last six games and the second defeat of the season against Kitzbühel. At the start of the season, the Eagles clearly had the upper hand with 6:2.
Shootout victory for Cortina
The second game of the day also ended 3-2, but this time for the home team – and only after a shootout. SG Cortina Hafro narrowly prevailed against KHL Sisak. After a goalless first third, Chad Pietroniro gave the home team the lead in the 29th minute. It remained 1-0 until four and a half minutes before the end before the guests were able to equalize. But just a minute and a half later, Cortina took the lead again. However, Sisak had another suitable answer ready and forced overtime with a goal from Nejc Brus 65 seconds before the end. The decision was finally made in the shootout, in which Oskari Kalajanniska converted the decisive penalty for Cortina. So Sisak had to admit defeat in the second game within 24 hours and missed the jump to the top of the table. With 32 points, the Croatians have as many points as leaders Red Bull Hockey Juniors, but have a worse goal difference. Cortina improved to eighth place in the table with their second win in a row.
