The Carinthian Ice Hockey Association is currently under massive criticism. The trigger is the organizational approach surrounding the current winter season. The implementing regulations were first published in November, but have since been changed twice – most recently on January 3rd. These subsequent adjustments cause uncertainty and dissatisfaction among the clubs – as the “Kronen Zeitung” reports.
The current promotion regulation in Division II is particularly controversial. The champion, who is determined in a supra-regional comparison of the West, Central and East groups, is generally obliged to be promoted to Division I. According to the regulations, if the champion forgoes this step, he faces a fine of 15,000 euros.
This requirement puts numerous clubs in a difficult position. Not all clubs have the financial or organizational resources to meet the higher demands of Division I. In order to avoid the impending punishment, drastic considerations are now circulating: from consciously accepting defeats to re-establishing the club under a different name to the idea of creating your own league outside of the association.
