The ice hockey world is in shock. Three young players from the Southern Alberta Mustangs junior team died in a serious traffic accident in the Canadian province of Alberta on Monday. The young people were on their way to a team training session when their car collided with a truck.
The victims are Cameron Casorso (18) and JJ Wright (18) from Kamloops, British Columbia, and 17-year-old Caden Fine from Birmingham, Alabama. All three played for the Mustangs in their first season. Casorso was goalkeeper, Wright and Fine were strikers.
According to police, the accident occurred at an intersection near the town of Stavely. A semi-truck loaded with gravel collided with the players’ car. Any help came too late for the three young people – they died at the scene of the accident. The truck driver only suffered minor injuries. The exact cause of the accident is currently being investigated.
The sympathy is great: clubs, players and politicians from all over Canada and beyond expressed their condolences. Hockey sticks with black ribbons were laid down in front of the ice rink in Stavely as a sign of mourning.
