Austria’s women’s ice hockey national team met Norway at the start of the three-nation tournament in the Sparkasse Arena Bozen on Saturday and celebrated a narrow 1-0 victory. Anja Trummer scored the goal (20th). The second match against hosts Italy follows on Sunday for head coach Alexander Bröms’ team from 1:00 p.m.
Austria’s women ended last season with a win and promotion to the top division. The new season started with a win on Saturday evening. With 13 players from the successful World Cup and some new young players, they were ready from the start against Norway.
In this constellation they only had three training sessions together, but they quickly found each other. Head coach Alexander Bröms also praised this: “We have worked hard in the last few days and had a lot of discussions. The more experienced players welcomed the new ones well and showed them everything. They knew immediately what their tasks were for the game.”
And the entire team fulfilled these requirements almost perfectly. They tried to give the Norwegians little space and attacked them early. Opportunities were created going forward and Anja Trummer completed one of them shortly before the first third break to make it 1-0.
Both teams found a few chances in the second and third periods, but it was the only goal in the game. To the Austrians’ delight, captain Anna Meixner: “I think it was a very interesting game for us, a good preparation game for the coming season. We have a very young team with many new faces who, in my opinion, did a good job.”
Head Coach Alexander Bröms: “The fighting spirit was there. It was a good game in which we deserved the win. The players solved it well in their own third so that they didn’t allow a goal throughout the entire game.”
Anna Meixner will no longer be on the ice against Italy as she is already on her way back to North America. The Salzburg player has big plans for her second season in the PWHL: “Above all, I want to have a better season than last year. Everything was new to me and I had to get used to no ice. I think I can come in this year with a completely different level of self-confidence. I want to give my best game after game and I’m looking forward to what’s to come.”
