Tomorrow, Sunday, the Vienna Capitals will play their last home game of 2025 against the EC-KAC. The backdrop will certainly do justice to the duel between the capital club and the current league leaders. A sold-out STEFFL Arena and thus the largest number of spectators of the current season of the win2day ICE Hockey League is expected for tomorrow. The game starts at 5:30 p.m. As usual, the encounter will be broadcast live on sporteurope.tv.
Initial situation
The Vienna Capitals’ three-game winning streak ended yesterday with a narrow 1-2 away defeat at Hydro Fehérvár AV19, but tomorrow the Viennese will also have to maintain their positive form in the STEFFL Arena. The Caps have won four of their last five games at home. Head coach Kevin Constantine’s team won their last home game to date against FTC-Telekom 4-3 on December 17th. Jérémy Grégoire scored the Capitals’ only goal in yesterday’s 2-1 defeat in Székesfehérvár. The Canadian, who scored in the previous away game at HC Falkensteiner Pustertal, collected four points in the last three games (2 goals + 2 assists).
In the team’s internal top scorer ranking, Grégoire is tied for second place together with captain and top scorer Linden Vey and Zane Franklin. The Canadian trio each have seven goals this season. The Caps’ best goalscorer is compatriot Carter Souch, who has netted eleven times so far. Marco Richter, Sebastian Wraneschitz and Senna Peeters will be missing tomorrow with injuries. The latter was able to train with the team on the ice today for the first time since his upper body injury suffered in pre-season. The 23-year-old, who underwent surgery at the beginning of October, is making good progress in his recovery.
The opponent
The EC-KAC will come to the STEFFL Arena tomorrow as league leaders. The red jackets will face arch rivals EC iDM Heat Pumps VSV in the 362nd Carinthian Derby today from 2:30 p.m. Kirk Furey’s team won seven of their last eight games as of Saturday lunchtime. In the only defeat during this period, the 2:3 defeat at the Moser Medical Graz99ers on December 7th, the Klagenfurt team at least took one point. The KAC suffered its last defeat after regular playing time on November 26th, 6:9 in Innsbruck. The Vienna Capitals haven’t had much to celebrate against the KAC in recent years. Since the epic victory in game seven of the “best of seven” quarter-final series of the 2021/22 season, the Viennese have only won one competitive game against the record champions. On January 6th, 2023, the Caps won 4-1 in the STEFFL Arena at home. Since then, there have been eleven competitive defeats in a row against the Red Jackets. The Viennese team lost their last meeting 2-4 on November 21st, despite being in the lead for a while.
Statement Kevin Constantine, head coach of the Vienna Capitals
“In the current phase of the season, it’s about having enough strength for the upcoming tasks. We had a lot to discuss today and worked a lot with the video. The game against Klagenfurt is immensely important for us, we need a lot of energy for it. So today wasn’t that intense for the body, rather we took the time to discuss the necessary adjustments.”
