ÖEHV: First duel between Austria and Germany goes to the neighbors!

The first of two duels between Austria and Germany goes to the DEB selection. In Zell am See, red-white-red lost to the guests 3:4. On Saturday there is a chance for revenge.

After just four minutes, Austria found itself trailing 0-1, but then fought its way back into the game. In the 14th minute you were initially lucky with a shot from the pole and then unlucky in front of the visitors’ goal. It remained 0:1.

In the middle third, the ÖEHV team really turned up the heat, dominated the game at times and created numerous good chances. Peter Schneider and Dominic Zwerger ran towards Niklas Treutle’s goal in the 25th minute, but were denied by the German goalkeeper. Shortly afterwards it was Patrick Söllinger who prepared the target after a pass from Lucas Thaler and made it 1-1 through the pads.

Tempers on the ice became increasingly heated. Ramon Schnetzer was put in the penalty box in the 35th minute. Immediately after the two minutes had elapsed, Alexander Blank scored Germany’s lead again. Then the guests found themselves outnumbered, but shortly before the end of the second third the game had to be interrupted due to a broken plexiglass pane. The third break was brought forward and the remaining minute and a half was played afterwards.

The power play didn’t equalize, but a clever shot from Mario Huber into the right corner in the 41st minute did. Austria pressed for the lead and was rewarded by Thimo Nickl in the power play in the 47th minute. However, the celebration quickly died down after the equalizer came just 32 seconds later. The momentum changed again and once again the guests scored directly after a time penalty against Austria.

Just under two minutes before the end of the game, head coach Roger Bader took David Kickert off the ice, but the equalizer was no longer possible.

Austria was missing Benjamin Baumgartner in this game, who has been training with the team in the past few days but had to cancel the team camp due to persistent pain. The Swiss legionnaire is also out for the World Cup, as is the case Roger Bader reveals: “We were hoping that he would play today and take a step towards the World Cup. After training on Wednesday the pain was too great. That’s why he’s definitely out for the World Cup.”
