ICEHL preview: Will the Graz99ers achieve the playoff sweep?

The Moser Medical Graz99ers are leading 3-0 in the final series of the win2day ICE Hockey League against HC Falkensteiner Pustertal and can therefore secure their premiere title on Wednesday. The Styrians are still undefeated in the playoffs and would be only the third team to win the title without losing. In total, they have now been unbeaten for 15 games – this is the third-longest winning streak within a season. ORF Sport+ will broadcast final game four live from Bruneck from 7:45 p.m.

Since the 2021 playoffs, the best player of the postseason has always been awarded the playoffs MVP in the win2day ICE Hockey League. The name of the trophy is new this year: it is named in honor of former league president Dr. named Karl Safron.

5:1, 5:1 and 5:2 – this is how the first three final games ended in favor of Graz, who remain unbeaten in the 2026 playoffs. So far, only Salzburg 2022 and Vienna 2017 have achieved the feat of being crowned champion without a playoff defeat. There have already been five sweeps in the final series, most recently last season when Salzburg defeated the KAC 4-0.

Graz has taken the lead in all three finals against Pustertal so far, including in the first encounter in Brunico. However, the home team also had numerous chances there, but in the end they suffered a clear 1:5 defeat. It was the third clear home defeat for the South Tyroleans against the Styrians in the current season. In the basic round they lost 1:7 and 0:4.

Graz with the third longest winning streak within a season
The 99ers have now been undefeated for 15 games – this is the third-longest winning streak in a season. The 99ers’ last defeat was on February 20th, when they lost 4-0 in Bolzano. The KAC is at the top with the most wins in one season with 17 wins in 2010, followed by Feldkirch, which celebrated 16 wins in a row in 2002. The Vienna Capitals achieved the most wins in a row across all seasons: They remained unbeaten for an incredible 25 games in a row between February 21st and October 20th, 2017.

New: Playoff MVP trophy in honor of Dr. Karl Safron
Since the 2021 playoffs, the best player of the postseason has always been awarded the playoffs MVP in the win2day ICE Hockey League. Last season, Salzburg goalie Atte Tolvanen received this award for the third time. If the final series ends tomorrow, Wednesday, the trophy would be presented immediately afterwards to the player chosen by ice hockey journalists.

The name of the trophy is new this year: it is named in honor of former league president Dr. Karl Safron and is now called the Karl Safron Trophy. Safron was one of the founders of today’s ICE Hockey League and was a driving force behind the multinational league project from the start. From 2009 to 2013 he headed the league as president before remaining on the board as vice president in the following years. On January 30, 2026, Safron died at the age of 76 after a long, serious illness.

Salzburg would be the third team to receive a CHL ticket
Should Graz be crowned champion, EC Red Bull Salzburg would qualify as the third team in the win2day ICE Hockey League for the 2026/27 Champions Hockey League. The Red Bulls finished the regular season in third place. The top two of the regular season and the champion each receive a starting place. Since Graz already has the ticket in its pocket as the winner of the basic round, the third starting place would go to third-placed Salzburg.
