VSV coaching legend Greg Holst: “The VSV has to work harder!”

VSV’s last big run in the Carinthian derby against KAC was a long time ago. Under coach Greg Holst and club boss Giuseppe Mion, the Eagles not only celebrated their last championship title to date in the 2005/06 season, but also impressively dominated the duels with their arch rivals. Between February 2005 and February 2007, VSV won an incredible 17 derbies in a row.

There was recently a smaller run of success under coach Hannu Järvenpää, when Villach achieved six derby wins in a row between December 2013 and October 2015. Since then, however, Blau-Weiß has been waiting in vain for two derby successes in a row – now for eleven years. In the current season, the KAC also won two of the three duels so far.

Weak legionnaires, few local cracks

Master coach Greg Holst sees several reasons for the previous derby dominance: stronger Legionnaires, more home players on both sides and significantly more emotions and rivalry on the ice. “It was about honor. Many imports don’t even know this story anymore,” says Holst.

At the same time, the 71-year-old does not skimp on criticism of the current VSV team. Twelve defeats from the last 14 games speak for themselves, especially offensively. Holst calls for more hard work and focus on the details. He still sees the derby as a great opportunity: a victory could give the VSV new self-confidence and pave the way out of the sporting crisis.
