The Red Bulls are looking forward to the next home game in the win2day ICE Hockey League in the currently very intensive program and are expecting the HC TIWAG Innsbruck “Die Haie” in the Eisarena Salzburg on Sunday (3:00 p.m., CheckerBande Family Day, Sporteurope.tv).
After yesterday’s narrow defeat against Olimpija Ljubljana in front of their own crowd, the Red Bulls want to immediately return to winning ways and score as many points as possible, after having to work the extra shift against Linz, Vienna and yesterday in Ljubljana.
Initial situation
It continues in quick succession. The Red Bulls will play their eighth game in 17 days against Innsbruck tomorrow, so they were in action almost every other day. With yesterday’s overtime defeat at the league leaders in Ljubljana, the Red Bulls have fallen back to sixth place in the table, although they are only four points away from the top of the table (with the teams having different numbers of games). And Salzburg have shown that, even with the current intensive program, they can play on an equal footing with the currently best team in the league and, with a little more luck, they could have won the game.
On Sunday, however, you have to deliver your maximum performance again if you want to score points. The Tiroler Haie are in eleventh place in the table, but have recently scored with respectable successes – 3:2 after a penalty shootout against Graz and 7:6 after overtime against Ljubljana. Yesterday they also got a point at home and only had to bow to Hydro Fehérvár AV19 in extra time (1:2).
Reunion with an ex-Salzburger
In addition to the return of Steven Owre, the ICE Regular Season MVP 2023/24 with the Pioneers Vorarlberg, to the league – the Canadian played in the Swiss League last season – the most interesting personality from Salzburg’s perspective is the new coach in Innsbruck. Ryan Kinasewich was one of the top strikers in the league from 2010 to 2016 in what was then the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga with Zagreb, Graz, Dornbirn and Székesfehérvár and also played a short 14-game stint in Salzburg in the 2012/13 season. After several years as a coach in the ECHL, the 42-year-old Canadian has now returned to Austria as head coach of the Innsbruck Haie and will face the Red Bulls for the first time in this role.
Statement Niki Kraus
“It was bitter to lose the overall balanced game yesterday. We want to win again at home against Innsbruck, but we will definitely not underestimate them due to the situation in the table. We need every point and don’t want to lose sight of the teams at the top of the table. So the game against Innsbruck is extremely important for us. We want to get three points, that’s the only thing that counts.”
