The young Austrian ice hockey players continue to attract attention internationally: Defender Gregor Biber is in the final of the Swedish top league SHL with Rögle BK and therefore has a chance of winning the big title.
Confident semi-final promotion
Rögle BK clearly prevailed against the Växjö Lakers in the semi-finals. With a 3-2 away win in the fifth game, the team from Ängelholm secured their 4-1 series win. The game got off to a lively start: early goals from Bengtsson and Olofsson gave the team a 2-0 lead. Although Växjö fought back at times, Rögle kept his nerve and maintained the lead over time.
Important role for beavers
Gregor Biber, just 19 years old, played in the third pair of defenders and collected over six minutes of ice time. He recorded a hit and a plus/minus balance of +1. In total, the Lower Austrian can already look back on 49 appearances this season, eleven of them in the playoffs – an impressive record for a player of his age.
Comeback qualities in the quarterfinals
Reaching the final is all the more remarkable because Rögle BK was already on the verge of elimination in the quarter-finals. After a 3-0 deficit in the series against Färjestad BK, an impressive and historic comeback was achieved, which ultimately led to a ticket to the semi-finals.
Revenge in the final?
Skellefteå AIK, the opponent against whom Rögle lost in the final in 2024, now awaits in the final. In 2021, the club had to admit defeat in the fight for the title – so the first championship title in the club’s history is still a long time coming.
Chance of playing for the national team
Game 1 of the final series will take place next Thursday, and the new champion will be crowned at the beginning of May at the latest. For Gregor Biber, the next highlight could follow immediately: According to “LAOLA”, a stint in the Austrian national team seems quite possible.
