Both teams played with an open mind, went into duels intensively and really wanted to end the World Cup with a positive feeling. Austria created more chances, but Poland scored the goals in the first third and led 2-0 after 20 minutes. In the middle third there was still an open exchange of blows. Johanna Sintschnig finally got her team on the scoreboard in the 31st minute. And deserves it. A majority at the end of the middle third was missed to equalize.
This should happen in the next power play. In the 56th minute, Emma Lintner sent her team into extra time, but Poland had the better end. Austria finished the World Cup in third place, four points behind China and two behind Poland.
Head coach Arto Sieppi: “After a defeat you are always disappointed. We were here to win the title and we didn’t achieve the goal. However, I am very proud of the team. Especially the way they presented themselves today and fought back after a 0-2 defeat. We have taken a step. International ice hockey has grown. All the teams here presented themselves well and I am confident that if our players continue to work hard, we will achieve our goals in the future.”
