Just a few days after the incident in Graz, the ICEHL experienced the next middle finger scandal in Vienna yesterday. HC Innsbruck defender Kudla stretched it towards the Vienna audience after the end of the game.
Antonitsch feud as a trigger
What had happened? HCI defender Patrick Kudla took a slap shot in the direction of Sam Antonitsch in the last minute of the game in the 2:5 win against the Vienna Capitals, who assumed it was intentional and attacked Kudla. Both received penalties before the end of the game and Kudla was carried away with the middle finger gesture towards the Viennese audience.
Parallel to the Lewington incident
There was a similar incident in the ICEHL just a few days ago when Red Bull Salzburg defender Tyler Lewington showed the middle finger to the Styrian fans during the tough battle against the Graz99ers. He was then banned for five games and fined €2,400.
How will the league react now? The same offense should also mean the same punishment. One can assume that there will be clarity soon.
Further failure is imminent
A ban would be bitter for the Haie, because in addition to Kudla, top scorer Sebastian Benker is also at risk of being out. The striker left yesterday’s game prematurely. It is still unclear how he is doing and whether he will be able to play again tomorrow.
