The Ukrainian national ice hockey team caused a real sensation at the B World Cup: Ukraine will be promoted to the top division of the Ice Hockey World Championship for the first time in many years and will play against the best nations in the world in Germany in 2027.
At the Division I Group A tournament in Sosnowiec, Poland, Ukraine surprisingly prevailed against higher-rated teams such as France and hosts Poland. In the decisive game, the Ukrainians defeated Japan 3-1 and thus secured the second promotion place behind favorites Kazakhstan.
After the final siren, however, the big tremors began, because promotion also depended on the parallel game between Poland and Lithuania. When Lithuania finally surprisingly defeated hosts Poland 2-1 after extra time, their sensational promotion was sealed. The last time Ukraine played in the top division was at the 2007 World Cup!
Top favorites Kazakhstan won the tournament comfortably with 13 points, while Ukraine followed in second place with 10 points. Relegated France and Poland disappointingly narrowly missed out on promotion. Japan is relegated to Division I Group B after a weak tournament.
