Just a few months after his signing, Gerry Fleming’s chapter at the Dresden Ice Lions has already come to an end. As the club officially announced today, they are now going their separate ways.
Relegation seals the end
Fleming had only taken over as coach in December and was supposed to lead the Ice Lions out of the bottom of the table. However, this plan failed: at the end of the season there was bitter relegation, which meant that the sporting goals were clearly missed. Those responsible were therefore forced to draw conclusions.
Short engagement without a happy ending
The Canadian was able to give the team some stability in the meantime, but there was no lasting turnaround. The team was too inconsistent in crucial phases, meaning important points were missed in the fight to stay in the league.
Club is looking for a new beginning
With the separation, the Dresden Ice Lions now want to make a clear break and set the course for a new start. A successor for the coaching position should be presented promptly in order to advance planning for the coming season at an early stage. In addition, the Ice Lions should also be interested in VSV striker Adam Helewka.
Fleming’s future open
For Gerry Fleming it is the second dismissal within a short period of time after he was previously released from the Vienna Capitals. The coach was employed by the Viennese team for just over a year. What will happen next for the 58-year-old is currently unclear.
