A heated Carinthian derby between VSV and KAC ended with a 3-2 win for the red jackets on Friday evening. But long after the final siren, the focus was less on the result and more on a controversial referee decision.
In the 45th minute of the game, when the score was 1:1, the scene that brought the Villach town hall to a boil occurred. Outnumbered, VSV striker Felix Maxa stole the puck from KAC attacker From on the right half wall and immediately shot with a wrist shot. What followed was loud protests from the stands and great helplessness on the ice. What was explosive was that it was never clearly communicated what exactly was being checked during the video study. After the review, Smetana returned to the ice and simply stated: “The call on the ice stands. No goal.” There was no explanation, the guesswork in Villach was perfect.
A little later, the KAC coldly took advantage of the emotional unrest. Simeon Schwinger gave the Red Jackets a 2-1 lead. Although VSV defender Lindner managed to equalize in the power play, shortly before the end Jan Muršak made the final decision in favor of the KAC with his goal.
