KHL Sisak won the top game of the Alps Hockey League against the Red Bull Hockey Juniors on Thursday and moved within one point of the leaders in the table. Kitzbühel celebrated its jump to third place with a shutout win against Ritten. In addition, Jesenice and Meran ended their negative streaks in the shootout.
Almost 1,600 fans in Sisak experienced a truly top game between second-placed KHL Sisak and the Red Bull Hockey Juniors. The Croatians got off to a better start and took the lead in the fourth minute. The league leaders responded with a double strike in just 53 seconds and briefly turned the game around. But Sisak equalized and restored the lead shortly before the first period break. The game also remained intense and varied in the middle section: the Juniors equalized again, making it 4:3 for Sisak. Marinkovic then scored on the power play for the second time of the evening and took a two-goal lead for the first time. The visitors reduced the deficit before the break, but at the start of the final period Yeob made it 6:4 – also with his second goal. It stayed that way until the final siren. While the Juniors’ six-game winning streak ended, Sisak celebrated his third success in a row and is now just one point behind Salzburg.
Kitzbühel also won the second duel of the season with Ritten and improved to third place. After a week without games, the Tyroleans celebrated their first shutout of the season. After a goalless first period, Podlipnik gave the home team the lead on the first power play of the game. The Slovenian international increased the score to 2-0 in the 45th minute – this time with double numerical superiority. Ten minutes before the end, Hanl made the final decision. Goalie Tom McCollum shone with 37 saves and celebrated his first shutout in a KEC jersey.
Meran was able to end its series of defeats and celebrated an important victory in Zell am See. The reigning champions started strongly in front of almost 2,000 spectators and took the lead after ten minutes. At the beginning of the second third, the home team increased, but the South Tyroleans turned the game around within seven minutes – thanks, among other things, to a power play brace from Traversa. In the final third, the guests added a fourth goal before Wilfan (PP) and Tschurnig equalized for Zell am See. After goalless extra time, Nousiainen finally secured the away win in the shootout. Meran won in Pinzgau for the second time in a row and climbed to eleventh place.
The encounter between Vipiteno and Jesenice, which was only decided in a penalty shootout, also offered pure excitement. After a goalless opening third, the Slovenians initially took the lead, but the Broncos turned the game in their favor in the second third. In the final period, Jesenice increased the pressure and equalized both 2:2 and 3:3 – Lesnicar scored when goalie Zan Us went off the ice for another skater. In the shootout, Hrobat Plemelj secured the away win for the now ninth-placed Slovenians.
