The second game of the playoff series between Olimpija Ljubljana and HC Pustertal at Hala Tivoli was marked by emotions – the referees awarded a total of 236 penalty minutes in this game!
The game was already characterized by nicks, hidden fouls and increasing severity for long stretches. The referees’ line let things go a lot, which further heated up the situation. As the season progressed, emotions ran high, especially on Ljubljana’s side – frustration and aggression increasingly erupted in overly harsh actions.
Final phase
The climax came in the final phase: after several arguments, the situation finally escalated. There were scuffles and fights between players from both teams. The referees were the focus and had their hands full trying to bring the situation under control.
The consequence: a veritable flood of penalties, which added up to a total of 236 penalty minutes. Ljubljana was hit particularly hard, as they ended the game with only nine available field players.
Possible suspensions
Robert Sabolic and Alex Petan from Olimpija Ljubljana are particularly in focus for possible suspensions. Sabolic received a match penalty after an attack on the defenseless Raphael Andergassen, which could result in a ban or further disciplinary action.
Petan let his fist do the talking against Bowlby in the third period – disciplinary proceedings are also likely for him, which could lead to a ban. Both actions contributed significantly to the escalation of the game and will be closely examined by the ICEHL disciplinary committee.
