ICEHL preview: KAC reaches for the “season series sweep” in Bruneck!

Wednesday brings three early games from the 46th and 47th rounds in the win2day ICE Hockey League. In the top game, league leaders EC-KAC will face fifth-placed HC Falkensteiner Pustertal away from home. EC Red Bull Salzburg will also be playing at FTC-Telekom, and HC TIWAG Innsbruck will face HCB Südtirol Alperia in the Tyrol Derby.

League leaders EC-KAC became the first team to secure a playoff ticket last Sunday. The fifth-ranked HC Falkensteiner Pustertal is also well on its way to reaching the top 6. The South Tyroleans are currently twelve points ahead of seventh-placed Fehérvár. The KAC, in turn, has a four point lead over its first pursuer Graz. The Klagenfurt team were able to win all of the last five games; in the last 20 games, the Red Jackets only remained without points twice, winning 15 of them. Pustertal is also in good form, with a winning streak of three games in which only one goal was conceded. Before that, the Wolves suffered four defeats in a row, including a 2-3 defeat in Klagenfurt. The KAC also won the remaining two duels of the season (4:0 in Bruneck, 3:2/OT in Klagenfurt). The clash on Wednesday in Brunico is an early game of the 47th round.

Salzburg is visiting Budapest
Defending champion EC Red Bull Salzburg will face FTC-Telekom away from home in the early game of the 46th round. The Hungarians are currently in the important tenth place in the table and could gain some breathing room in the fight for the pre-playoffs with a win against the third-place team. The lead over eleventh-placed Villach is currently only one point. However, success against the Red Bulls is difficult to imagine as FTC have only won two of the last eleven games, while Salzburg have only lost one of the last 15 encounters. However, the Hungarians surprisingly won the first meeting in Budapest 2-1. Both duels in Salzburg went to the Red Bulls (5:1, 7:2). With a win after regular playing time, the Mozartstadt team could draw level with second place Graz in the table.

Tyrol derby between Innsbruck and Bolzano
In the third game of the day there will be a Tyrol derby between bottom of the table HC TIWAG Innsbruck and fourth place HCB Südtirol Alperia. This is an early game from the 47th round. Both teams are facing each other for the third time this season, with Bozen winning the previous two duels 3-1 and 4-1. In total, Innsbruck has been waiting for a win against the South Tyroleans for seven games and since January 1, 2024. Last weekend, the Tyroleans celebrated a surprising 3-2 home win against Graz, followed by a 2-5 defeat against Vienna. The success against the 99ers was their only win from the last ten games. Bolzano, on the other hand, recently had to admit defeat 4:7 in Salzburg despite a strong performance; before that, the South Tyroleans celebrated two wins in a row.
