The move from last year’s ICEHL scorer Jason Akeson to the Swiss top club Genève-Servette HC took place after the end of the 2024/25 season. The 2025/26 season is now underway, but the Canadian striker has not yet played a competitive game for Geneva. Now an interim solution has been found!
The reason for this is still the National League’s foreigner regulations. Akeson is still in the process of Swiss naturalization and cannot play in championship games until this is completed. In order to gain match practice at the highest level, an interim solution has now been found.
It has been officially confirmed that Genève-Servette and HIFK Helsinki have agreed to loan Jason Akeson for the Spengler Cup. Also part of the agreement is 20-year-old defender Eric Schneller. Both players are expected to give the traditional Finnish club additional quality and depth during the tournament.
HIFK manager Mika Kortelainen referred to the high stress at the Spengler Cup with several games on consecutive days. The loan serves both HIFK and Genève-Servette, as Akeson receives competitive action, while the Geneva team can keep their new addition in the rhythm of the game.
Akeson, now 35, has had a long career. He played over 400 games in the AHL and 15 NHL appearances. In the previous two seasons he was one of the most striking offensive forces at HC Pustertal in the ICE Hockey League.
