Exports: Austro striker reaches for college crown!

In the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) there is the grand finale for the national title today. An Austro crack will also take part there.

Vasily Zelenov can look back on an exciting first college season. He completed 27 appearances as a dual national for the University of Wisconsin Badgers and was able to impress with 18 points. The traditional team was led by striker Gavin Morrissey, who scored 36 points. Zelenov ended up in 9th place in the team’s internal scoring race.

In the playoffs, the Badgers celebrated victories against Dartmouth (5:1), Michigan State (4:3) and most recently North Dakota (2:1). Zelenov collected two assists in the three games, including the 1-0 win in the semifinals against the Fighting Hawks from Grand Forks.

Already three red-white-red champs

Today the final of the Frozen Four awaits Zelenov and Wisconsin. There the team is aiming for its seventh “national title” – only three teams nationwide have won more championships. At 11:30 p.m. CET there will be a showdown with the University of Denver in the “T-Mobile Arena” in Las Vegas. Remarkable: the last Austrian to celebrate a college title with Denver was Emilio Romig in 2017. Zelenov would be the fourth Austro crack to win the NCAA title after Matthias Trattnig (1999 with Maine) and Thomas Vanek (2003 with Minnesota).
