After hall closures: Positive signals in Styria!

While ice rinks are being closed across the country, there is new hope around the Frohnleiten location, as the “Kronen Zeitung” reports. Constructive discussions are currently underway between those responsible for ice sports, the state of Styria and the affected communities about a possible follow-up project. This was confirmed by Styria’s ice hockey president Philipp Hofer.

After the existing ice rink was converted into a ball sports hall for cost reasons, a new solution is now being worked on. Hofer did not want to give any details to the “Krone”: “We are trying to find a good solution in the interests of ice sports. There has already been a good exchange with all those responsible, the state and the state governor. Further discussions have been scheduled. But it is still too early, there are still too many points open.”

However, concrete plans are already circulating on the Internet. Accordingly, a new air ice rink could be built on a property next to the old hall. An investor should play a central role in the implementation. If an agreement is reached, it would be a forward-looking solution for ice sports in the region after weeks of discussions about the location.

There is also positive news in Graz: Hall B in Liebenau will remain open all year round for the first time this year. This means that the ice is not defrosted in the spring, as is usual, but is also available for training and competitions in the summer. For Hofer, this is a milestone: “A great story! It’s an enormous improvement for competitive sport. We’re getting closer to international level.”

Year-round operation brings numerous advantages. Training opportunities are improving significantly, and nationwide and international summer training camps are also planned. In the future, young players from Styria will no longer have to go to Bruck an der Leitha, Ferlach, the Czech Republic or Slovakia.
