Olimpija Ljubljana and HC TIWAG Innsbruck – Die Haie met for the third time in the current season and once again the encounter became a “high scoring affair” in which the Haie ultimately prevailed.
In the first section between league leaders Olimpija Ljubljana and HC TIWAG Innsbruck, everything went as the starting situation suggested. The Slovenians had more of the game and gained a quick 2-0 lead thanks to a brace from Marly Quince. However, the Innsbruck team came out of the locker room as if they had been changed and turned the game around in the middle period with four goals in just over six minutes – Max Coatta scored two of them. But Ljubljana didn’t give up yet: in the same section, the Dragons made it 3-4 and also scored the supposed equalizer, which was, however, revoked due to goaltender interference after video study. Innsbruck increased their lead to 5:3 in the final third before Ljubljana launched a final attack and escaped into overtime. There – as before – Olimpija dominated events. Haie goalie Matthew Vernon kept his team in the game before Benjamin Corbeil made the decision a few seconds before the end of extra time.
