The EC-KAC prevailed in the third derby of the season against the EC iDM Heat Pumps VSV and thus extended its lead in the table. For the Eagles, however, it was their fifth defeat en suite.
After being out for over a month, KAC striker Jan Muršak made a perfect comeback in the derby. In the eleventh minute, the former NHL player gave the home team the lead after a three-on-one situation. In the 18th minute, the Slovenian followed up with a remarkable wraparound and scored a brace.
Early in the middle period, the Red Jackets used the power play for the first time, but it was precisely in this phase that the guests scored their first goal: Maximilian Rebernig used his own rebound. VSV now got into the game better, but soon suffered another setback – Maximilian Preiml scored with a shot from the blue line in the 35th minute to make it 3-1.
At the beginning of the final third, Matt Fraser increased the score to 4:1. Although Philipp Lindner was able to shorten the score again, a powerplay goal from David Maier ultimately sealed Klagenfurt’s deserved 5-2 home win. With the seventh derby home win in a row, the KAC also extended its lead in the table in the win2day ICE Hockey League.
Both teams are back in action on Sunday: VSV welcomes HCB Südtirol Alperia, KAC travels to Vienna.
