Will an AlpsHL club and a former ICEHL participant merge?

There are once again signs of a profound structural change in Vorarlberg ice hockey. After the final failure of the planned forest hall, the Alps Hockey League club EC Bregenzerwald is facing an uncertain future – and is apparently looking for a sustainable solution. According to the report of NEW Vorarlberg daily newspaper A merger with the Dornbirner EC, the traditional club that was still active in the ICE Hockey League until 2022, is being discussed behind the scenes.

What is particularly explosive is the fact that the Dornbirn EC officially emphasizes that it knows nothing about any concrete merger plans. Nevertheless, political discussions are said to have already taken place in which, in addition to the city of Dornbirn, representatives of the Vorarlberg Ice Hockey Association are also involved. A meeting between DEC chairman Christof Schwendinger and the Dornbirn sports department is scheduled.

The background is clear: EC Bregenzerwald no longer has a long-term home following the closure of the Wälderhalle and is still dependent on the exhibition stadium in Dornbirn. However, this role as a guest tenant could become problematic if the Bulldogs location were to become increasingly involved in professional sports again.

Whether there will actually be a merger of a current AlpsHL club with a former ICEHL participant or whether alternative models will be pursued will likely be decided in the coming weeks.
