Konstantin Komarek is playing well in Sweden this season. Nevertheless, his team is currently bottom of the Swedish second division. Teammate and compatriot Benedikt Oschgan also has it anything but easy.
The former Austrian international is one of the influential players at Västerås IK and is also his team’s top scorer. With his experience, game intelligence and offensive strength, the 33-year-old has long since become a central figure in the Swedes’ game.
Komarek acts as a leader for Västerås, takes responsibility in all game situations and is a mainstay, especially in the power play. He also holds the captaincy in his ninth season in Sweden.
Unbelievable series of defeats
The 33-year-old center started the season extremely strongly this year and had a goalscoring streak that lasted five games, which also helped his team to a winning streak. But the worm has been completely in since mid-November. A 7-0 win over the Nybro Vikings was followed by 18 defeats in the following 20 games, which meant they fell to the bottom of the table.
It’s not necessarily Komarek’s fault: he collected 13 points during the losing phase and 15 points in the 16 games before that. But his team has to slowly but surely get back to winning ways, because there are only 13 games left and relegation is getting closer and closer.
Oschgan is fighting for playing time
In addition to Komarek, Benedikt Oschgan is a second Austrian in the Västerås squad. But the goalkeeper cannot get past the 23-year-old Finn Rasmus Korhonen, who was drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in 2021. Oschgan was certainly hoping for more playing time with the move than before at Växjö, but so far he has only made 9 starting appearances.
