EC Red Bull Salzburg missed out on a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions Hockey League. Despite a passionate comeback in the second leg against Ingolstadt, the decisive goals were missing in the end to completely make up for the deficit from the first duel. The German representative prevailed over the entire duel with a total of 9:6.
Salzburg got off to a powerful start and reduced the deficit early on when Brandon Coe ran past a deflected puck and finished dryly into the corner. Shortly before the end of the third, the home team followed up: Nash Nienhuis brought the goal home with a long-range shot through traffic to make it 2-1.
In the second section, Salzburg continued to work its way back. In a curious move, Travis St. Denis equalized after a delayed penalty – the video review confirmed the goal, making the game 3-1 and thus two goals behind in the overall duel.
Salzburg remained in control in the third third. Nevertheless, the Germans initially managed to score the next goal. After the goalie was pulled and a numerical advantage situation occurred, Mario Huber gave the home team another two-goal lead. Despite the great pressure and a clear share of the game, the two more necessary goals were not scored before an empty net goal sealed the overall decision in Ingolstadt’s favor.
Salzburg is saying goodbye to the current CHL season, but showed great character in the second leg and fought back impressively.
