A few years ago, Canadian Ben Betker laced up his skates for HC TIWAG Innsbruck – Die Haie. A few days ago he made the jump to the National Hockey League – but not as a player.
In 2021/22, Betker defended for the Haie and was able to collect 13 points in 49 games. The following year he played for Hydro Fehervar AV19, among others. His active playing career ended after the 2023/24 season.
The 30-year-old took part in the NHL Officiating Combine in 2024, and in 2025 he was included in the referee contingent for the 2025/26 NHL season. At the time, Betker told the BCHL: “This means everything to me. Being able to share this success with family and friends was really great. There’s still a lot to do, but it’s a step in the right direction and I’m just enjoying the process.”
The former Edmonton Oilers draft pick was scheduled to make his debut in the best league in the world for almost two weeks. On April 9th, the Colorado Avalanche hosted the Calgary Flames and won 3-1. In this encounter, Kyle Rehman and Ben Betker acted as referees – a special moment.
