EC Bregenzerwald’s decades-long dream of having its own home appears to have been dashed. As the association confirms, the construction of the Wälderhalle in Andelsbuch has “almost certainly failed”. The reason for this is a financing gap of around three million euros, which can no longer be closed.
Cost explosion and lost time
The project was already politically decided in 2019 – a multi-purpose hall for 1,800 spectators, with a restaurant and disco, was to be built. But Corona, supply chain problems and skyrocketing construction costs thwarted those responsible’s plans. The originally estimated 10 million euros grew to around 19 million euros – despite the resizing to only 1,200 seats and a simplified design.
Support is not enough
The country, region and investors contributed considerable sums:
- State of Vorarlberg: 6.5 million euros in funding
- Bregenzerwald region: 600,000 euros
- Investor group “Team Wälderhalle” (around Hans Metzler): 8.8 million euros
Nevertheless, the crucial gap of three million euros remains. Subsequent financing via the 24 municipalities of the Bregenzerwald region does not appear to be in sight.
Bitter consequences for the ECB
The possible end of the project would have a massive impact on the future of EC Bregenzerwald. The club currently plays its home games in the Dornbirn exhibition stadium – a permanent solution that is neither attractive for fans nor for the club. The lack of club life, low spectator numbers and the geographical distance to the Rhine Valley are putting increasing strain on the traditional club.
The partnership with the Pioneers Vorarlberg is also on shaky ground. If the ICE team from Feldkirch were to leave Feldkirch in the future, the ECB would be left without a home or perspective, both in terms of sport and structure.
The last hope is fading
Although there is still a small glimmer of hope for a turnaround at the club, the window of opportunity for rescue seems closed. Even sports councilor Martina Rüscher recently indicated to the “Neue” that the investor group around Hans Metzler had made its decision – and it was probably against the construction.
After almost 30 years of planning and discussions, the “Wälderhalle saga” is coming to a sobering end – and the EC Bregenzerwald is facing an uncertain future.
