Maintenance costs published: Big criticism of the Villach ice rink project!

The large-scale “New Ice Arena” project in Villach continues to spark discussions: a query via the “Ask the State” portal now shows for the first time exactly what annual costs the city of Villach will incur after completion. Around 880,000 euros per year are forecast for the operation and maintenance of the new double ice rink – a figure that particularly makes “Responsibility for the Earth” and the “Greens” sit up and take notice shortly before the budget meeting.

25 million project is taking shape

Villach’s new ice rink complex has been under construction since spring. The existing hall is to be renovated and a second ice rink built for a total of 25 million euros. Completion is scheduled for the end of 2026/beginning of 2027.

The now published business plan for the first full year of operation 2027/28 shows in detail:

  • 230,111 euros for maintenance measures (repairs, investments, materials, etc.)
  • 646,124 euros for ongoing operating costs (electricity, water, district heating, insurance, IT, fuel)

However, the city points to possible savings through photovoltaics and cheaper electricity purchasing options.

Criticism of Responsibility Earth: “Completely missed”

Gerald Dobernig, club chairman of “Responsibility for the Earth”, is sharply critical, as the “Kleine Zeitung” reports: “A project of this magnitude is completely misguided in the current economic situation and is a backpack for future generations.”

Greens: Important project – but costs must remain sustainable

The Greens are generally positive about the project, but emphasize the need for transparent and sustainable financing. Local councilor Karin Herkner also emphasizes that the hall must remain accessible to everyone and that the planned women’s performance center represents an important step towards equal opportunities.

Support from the SPÖ, ÖVP and FPÖ – clear words from the club

The major parties continue to clearly support the expansion. There is also clear criticism of the earth’s negative attitude from the Villacher Stadthalle association. Managing director Martin Kroissenbacher says: “If you describe such a widely accessible, sustainably planned infrastructure as a failure, you would have to question every sports facility in the future.”

Usage should double

The existing ice rink has around 90,000 active users each season. Once the expansion is complete, the city expects the number of uses to double as well as numerous advantages for clubs, young talent and popular sports.

Construction progress:

  • End of 2025: Shell completed
  • Spring 2026: Technical expansion
  • Summer 2026: Interior work
  • Fall/Winter 2026/27: Planned completion
