ÖEHV: U20 national team is clearly defeated by Latvia

Austria’s U20 men’s ice hockey national team started the month-long World Cup countdown with a 2:6 against the top division nation Latvia in the IIHF break at a four-nation tournament in Stavanger, Norway. Johannes Neumann scored the two goals for the ÖEHV selection (30th, 57th/PP1). On Friday, head coach Philipp Pinter’s team continues against hosts Norway from 7:00 p.m.

Austria had to accept a 0-1 defeat by Kristers Ansons early in the first period (8th). It was also Ansons who made it 2-0 for Latvia in a power play (16′) in what was essentially a balanced game – Red-White-Red had one more shot on goal in the first 20 minutes. In the second third, Ansons completed his hat trick and increased the lead to 3-0 for the Latvian team, which will compete at the World Juniors in St. Paul, Minneapolis in the USA at the end of December/beginning of January (26th).

A little later, Austria’s U20 were finally in the match in terms of results: Johannes Neumann made it 1:3 with a well-placed shot from the left faceoff circle shortly before halftime of the game (30th). Latvia appeared hardened and did not allow Austria to catch up, on the contrary: Dāvids Tarvids scored to make it 4-1 (38th).

Exactly one minute later the game was decided: Markuss Kristians Sieradzkis increased the score to 5:1 (39′). Curious: After 40 minutes, Austria was still ahead in shots on goal with one more attempt than Latvia.

After just 25 seconds, Daniels Serkins made it 6-1 for Latvia in the final period (41st). Just under three minutes before the end, Johannes Neumann made the score 2-6 with his second goal, this time in the majority (58th).
