When the Vienna Capitals meet EC VSV this Sunday, it will be a very special game for 25-year-old striker Benjamin Lanzinger. The Capitals’ new signing, who moved to the federal capital from his hometown club Villach in the summer, is facing an emotional first duel with his former club.
Lanzinger, son of VSV legend Günther Lanzinger, has mixed feelings about meeting the “Eagles” again. “It will definitely be special,” the 25-year-old told the “Kronen Zeitung”. At the same time, he dampens expectations of an overly emotional evening: “But probably not as bad as when I appear in Villach for the first time and don’t have a blue shirt on.”
Lanzinger quickly settled into sport in Vienna. The reunion with an old acquaintance also plays a role: Since his move, he has been side by side with his childhood friend and teammate Christof Kromp. Kromp, whose father Wolfgang Kromp is also an ex-VSV professional, also comes from Villach. “We have known each other since we were little children. Our families are close friends, and now being on the ice together again is something special,” says Lanzinger.
For the striker, the move to Vienna was an important impulse for personal and sporting development. He sees this as the “right time to try something new.” He sums it up: “Perhaps I would have regretted it later if I hadn’t taken this step.” Despite the emotions, Lanzinger should do everything he can to score the next points for the Vienna Capitals against his former club.
