An exceptionally harsh penalty is currently causing debate in the British ice hockey scene. Defenseman Tyler Poole was suspended for 31 games after a bat attack – one of the league’s longest suspensions in recent years.
The incident occurred in NIHL Division 2, the fourth tier of English ice hockey. Poole attacked an opposing player with the bat in the face while he was in the dugout. The action was considered particularly dangerous by the referees and the league.
The consequences followed quickly: In addition to the 31-game ban, his team, the Nottingham Lions 2, immediately parted ways with the 27-year-old defender. It is also explosive that Poole cannot start the ban until he finds a new club, as he is currently without a team.
